March 29, 2016: Piaggio Ape is regarded as India’s leading 3-wheeler mini truck and is very popular among small business owners for its performance. Vehicle specifications include a Single Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Air Cooled Diesel engine, (engine also available in CNG and LPG fuel variants), power between 7.5 - 8.1 bhp and torque between 18 - 22.2 Nm. Its decent gradeability range from 12 - 22.16% enables Ape to carry different loads like FMCG, sacks, food items, and more on both city roads and hill roads. Its all 11 variants has common GVW of 975 kg, however, with different payload capacities ranging from 460 - 560 kg.
It has no power steering but handle bar to offer moderate maneuverability and has strong chassis frame. Ape’s cabin has basic features including standard seats and instrument cluster. The vehicle is very famous among small business owners who transport their primary work load through busy city streets. Effective load carrying capacity, handy maneuverability with handle bar steering, comfortable seating and economical aspect make this three-wheeler small commercial vehicle from Piaggio a hit in the market.
Also, the long service intervals and smaller turnaround time has played a vital role in improving the sales of Piaggio Ape in India. Specs: Engine - Single Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Air Cooled Diesel, Single Cylinder Forced Air Cooled CNG and Single Cylinder Forced Air Cooled LPG Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) - 975 kg Wheelbase - 1,920 mm and 2,100 mm Power Steering - No Engine and Performance Piaggio Ape is available in three engine options namely Diesel, CNG and LPG with respective motors, that is, Single Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Air Cooled for Diesel, Single Cylinder Forced Air Cooled for CNG and Single Cylinder Forced Air Cooled for LPG. The power numbers for diesel, CNG and LPG are 7.5 hp @ 3,600 rpm and 18 Nm @ 2,200 - 2,400 rpm, 7.6 hp @ 3,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm @ 2,200 rpm, and 8.1 hp @ 3,400 rpm and 22.2 Nm @ 2,000 rpm, respectively. The common gear 4-speed constant mesh gear transmission box available in all 32 fuel type variants along with same Multi Disc Wet Type clutch takes the gradeability quotient to 22.16%, 12% and 18% for Diesel, CNG and LPG, respectively. All these four variants are available with all three fuel options. Talking about the dimensions, the PV, DV and HB variant share the same 1,920 mm wheelbase while LD variant has 2,100 mm wheelbase. Taking into consideration other dimensions, the overall width for PV, HB and LD is 1,490 mm and for DV is 1,495 mm, overall height for PV and LD is 1,635 mm and for DV and HB is 1,750 mm. The length, however, varies for diesel and other two fuel options, that is, 2,965 mm for PV, DV and HB, and 3145 mm for LD when the fuel is diesel, while it is 2,930 mm for PV, 2,965 mm for DV and HB, and 3,110 mm for LD for rest of the two fuel options. Talking about the load capacity, the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is 975 kg for all the variants but they differ in kerb weight and payload capacities. The kerb weight ranges from 415 kg to 438 kg for diesel, 466 kg to 481 kg for CNG and 441 kg to 481 kg for LPG fuel options.
The subsequent payload capacity to these kerb weight ranges are 560 kg to 540 kg for diesel, 460 kg to 509 kg for CNG and 480 kg to 534 kg for LPG fuel option. The ground clearance for diesel fuel variants is 240 mm while CNG and LPG variants stand at 165 mm above the ground. Handling and Suspension With handle bar type of steering, Ape family has very handy maneuverability available for drivers and being a street oriented commercial vehicle, it’s very easy to navigate through sharp turns and narrow roads during peak traffic hours. The relatively small wheelbase and turning radius also help drivers to move around easily. Coming down to suspension units, the front unit in all body type irrespective of the fuel option is Helical with Dampener and Hydraulic Telescopic Shock Absorber while the rear unit is Rubber Compression Spring with Dampener and Hydraulic Telescopic Shock Absorber. Both these units work very effectively in tandem with each other to offer a bump free drive irrespective of the terrain.
Braking and Safety The vehicle has decent braking features such as Drum Brakes that are Hydraulically Actuated Internal Expanding Shoe Type - combined units, thus helping the driver to stop the vehicle at short distances and on time to prevent mishaps. Separate parking brakes offer better performance.
Further safety has been improved by offering seat belts, strong chassis structure, lab tested material body material and crash tested design, thus ensuring optimum protection to the driver and the cargo. Design and Comfort Aesthetically, there is not much to describe about Ape, but the overall design looks good on the road with different color options including Bianco White, Western Red, Golden Yellow, Sahara Yellow, Charming Blue, Brilliant Green and Crimson Orange. The cabin too, is only equipped with basic features like comfortable seats and instrument cluster but nothing fancy to talk about in detail.
